Alabama's Historical African American Jewel.
Survival is the name of the game for many African American institutions of higher learning in this country. Young people of all persuasions now compete for places at "Big Ten", "Ivy League" and public and private institutions of all sizes. This was not so just a few decades ago.
The history of African American struggle to secure their families, earn an education, gain freedom and succeed in society after the Emancipation Proclamation is wrapped up in a small southern institution that I am proud to know as my Father's alma mater. I hope he is as thrilled to view this pictorial as I was collecting it. Happy Father's Day.
